Homework At Knoch

Homework+At+Knoch

Introduction-

You’ve had me all your life, but you probably don’t like me. I’m always rushed, even though I’m important. I show up when you least expect me to, and I can ruin your day in an instant. What am I? Homework!

Ever since preschool, we’ve all had homework, and even though it’s severity has changed, it’s just as relevant. Personally, I have homework every night and spend up to three hours working on it. For a while, I thought this was pretty normal. I just assumed everyone had a whole bunch of homework every night, and that was that.

But then, I had a realization- there are people in this school that barely ever have homework.

Now, this probably seems like a stupid realization. It’s pretty much common sense; not everyone’s school day is the same.

This is interesting to me though. So, I decided to do something most students wouldn’t bother with- research. Not just “Google and read a couple Yahoo Ask answers about it” research. Actual research.

So, here it is. A full compilation of all the statistics and quotes about homework that relates specifically to Knoch.

Teacher Quotes-

The teachers I decided to interview were Mr.Pflugh and Mr.Limbacher. They have pretty opposite opinions and homework policies, so I figured it’d be interesting to see how their answers differ.

If you’ve ever had Mr.Plfugh, you’ll know how laid back he is on homework.

“I ask students to keep up on their notes and readings before a test or quiz hits, and give a reading on a key topic due the next day here and there. But, in general, I do not give a lot of homework,” said Mr.Pflugh.

Unlike Mr.Pflugh, Mr.Limbacher tends to be more strict on homework, and gives his students anywhere from 3-5 hours of homework every week.

“Homework is the tool/skill used to make a concept or idea your own. It’s very important. ” said Mr.Limbach

Wondering if their homework opinions are deep rooted, I thought it’d be interesting to start of by asking how they felt about homework when they were in school.

“I did not like it as a student, I would assume few did! So, when I give something to read and write on, I attempt to make it something that students would find interesting,” said Mr.Plfugh.

“It hasn’t changed. I feel the same way about homework now,” said Mr.Limbacher.

Now, we all know we get points for it, but how do teachers think homework effects our grades in the long run?

“In general, students either do the homework in an superb fashion, do a poor and sloppy job, or just do not turn it in. Probably an indicator or chance of success?!” said Mr.Plfugh.

“It should effect your grades, hopefully. Since I grade more on effort; I don’t think homework should be right or wrong, more like a point of discussion,” said Mr.Limbacher

And finally, the age old question; how much time should students really be spending on homework?

“Hmmm .. that’s a tough one! That would depend on class load, what you plan on doing with yourself after school, etc,” said Mr.Plfugh.

“I don’t know if i can give you an exact number. There are times when struggling on a concept that you should spend longer. For me, spelling took me longer than other subjects,” said Mr.Limbacher.

“I think homework has a benefit but I think the quantity some people get is crazy. I don’t think you need to spend hours doing homework for one subject.” Abby Kopac Junior

“Homework makes me stressed, and I complain about it 95% of the time. However, it does help me learn the material much better than if I were left to do everything on my own. (I am not self-motivated at all tbh.) Homework is jank, but so is life.”  Claire Rodgers Senior

“I feel like homework doesn’t do you much good. Mostly, because if I don’t understand it, I can’t get any help from the teacher. And if I don’t do the part I don’t understand, I get points off” Kendall Mullen Freshman
