Rebeccah Rodgers, Madison Zellhart (Grades 11 & 12 Knoch High School), and Mikayla Fleeger (Grade 12 Slippery Rock Area Senior High School) attend the Sports Medicine Program at Butler County Area Vocational Technical School. While doing regular school work from sending schools, theories and skills within the Vo-Tech program, and having extracurricular activities outside of school, these girls decided to join two nationally-recognized organizations. In the one organization, Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA), their academic competition of choice is Community Awareness. Choosing the topic for community awareness was a challenge for the students because there are many options, but they agreed upon addiction in Butler County. Addiction in Butler County is growing every second. The purpose of presenting to schools is to prevent new addictions in teens and assist current addictions in the community. Parents, teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and friends are all there to help with addiction. There are multiple centers located throughout Butler to help with any addiction like The Gaiser Addiction Center located on Old Plank Road or the OARS – Butler Outpatient Addiction Recovery Services located on South McKean Street.
