Mr. Smith- Modest Mouse//The Lonesome Crowded West
March 23, 2017
Mr Smith is known as “that cool teacher” by almost everyone that’s had him. A skateboarder who’s seen a lot of cool stuff, been in a music video, and probably done more than all of us combined. He’s also one of the go-to guys for good music recommendations, as he listens to a wide variety of music. That being said, here’s what Mr. Smith had to say about his absolute favorite album: The Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse.
So what makes this your favorite album?
This is one of the first albums that came to mind. It is their “breakthrough” album for them and a pretty influential album for the late 90’s. It has always stuck with me because it has so many different layers, styles, and feelings all mixed into one album that cohesively fits. I’ve always liked the raw guitar tone and there are a couple tracks that have really weird/original drum beats. This album shaped a good deal of music I ended up listening to. I was 16 or 17 when I first heard it, and I found out about it from a Zero Skateboards video. I once listened to it on repeat during a 5 or 6 hour drive to Louisville. I will say my cd changer was in my trunk/the CD was not able to be changed while driving so that could have played a part too.
What’s your favorite song from the album? Are there any songs you don’t enjoy?
“Doin’ the Cockroach” would have to be my favorite. The lyrics, the guitar lick that goes right into 4 heavy power chords in the verses, the drums at the end. Its a song that keeps building and creating tension until the end. As for my least favorite, I don’t think I have one. The whole thing is perfect from start to end if you’re into that genre of music.
Lastly, what is your favorite quote from the album?
“The malls are the soon to be ghost towns so long, farewell, goodbye”
