New Year New… Forget It
February 8, 2018
“I’m going to lose 15 pounds.” “I’m going to go to go to the gym 4 times a week.” “I’m going to do all my homework everyday this year.” “I’m going to not drink pop for this whole entire year.” “I’ll stop swearing in every sentence.
HA. As if that will happen soon.
Listen I say these things every year but I’ve literally never actually completed a new year’s resolution.
First of all, doing something for a full year seems hard enough. I mean for me doing something like a resolution MIGHT last me a week.
Secondly, why does the start of a new year mean I have to change. Something I will never understand is why so many people choose that time to decide to better their life. But it seem to be the status quo. Personally, I couldn’t care less.
If I really wanted to change, then why wouldn’t I just change when I decide I don’t like something I do. I’m not gonna wait until the start of a new year so I can feel special.
If anything, I think I would be upset if I did something just because it was the start of a new year. I would feel like I’m doing it for everyone else and to show off. Why can’t I change something about myself because it will make me feel better?
You do you, but don’t act like you’re that much better just because you made a resolution. Cuz we both know that you aren’t actually going to stick to it.
And I’m not the only one who feels this way.
“New Year’s resolutions are stupid,” said junior Gabbie Fisher. “No one actually does them.”
I mean I’m sure there are actually a couple of you who stick to your resolutions, and honestly go you. I don’t have the willpower to do that.
Then there are the ones who make one but literally never even attempt it.
Fisher said, “I always say I have one, but I think of it the day of and never think of it again.”
Same Gabbie. Same.
Do I wish I could be one of those people who makes a resolution like “I’m going to lose 15 pounds by the end of the year”? You betcha.
But newsflash, You don’t have to make a resolution to be a functioning member of society. If you don’t care to change anything about yourself, then DON’T MAKE A STUPID RESOLUTION WHEN YOU AREN’T GOING TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IT!!!!!
And for those of you who’re going to stick to the resolution that you’ve made, please don’t rub it in my face. It makes me feel bad that I can’t stick to what I want to do.
Fisher said, “New Year resolutions can be good if you’re proactive, but almost no one is.”
And to leave you with wise words from one of the most influential people, Ron Swanson, “I can do what I want.”
