Fact Or Fiction: Summer Flings

October 10, 2018

This summer was supposed to be the summer to end all summers. And in most ways, it was. I did everything one strives to do during vacation- I traveled in Europe, made lots of money, and hung out with my friends at least once a week. I was 18 and determined to #livemybestlife.

But there’s one thing I didn’t do- have a totally unrealistic summer romance that ended in love. But, believe me when I say I tried!!!

Long story, that probably won’t interest you whatsoever, short, two new boys got hired at my job this summer. One is 14, so he’s irrelevant.

But the other- let’s call him Cute Boy From Work- is 17, taller than me, and pretty easy on the eyes if I do say so myself. And, I gotta say, I was shook. Definitely romance potential.

But, before I could start singing my summer love song, I needed Cute Boy to, ya know, like me back. I was determined to have my own Summer Nights Moment™, complete with

choreography and everything! So, I started chatting him up at work. I found out he is also a senior (score!) at another school. I tried my best to flirt, but, I gotta be honest- I have no idea how to flirt. I’m a socially awkward beanstalk and we all know it!

Nevertheless, I tried. And, I actually believed it was working. Emphasis on believed.

After shooting my shot via text, things went from yay! to ehhh. Sure, we have a snapchat streak and I am on his private story list (can any boys explain to me what that means???), but things haven’t escalated. Maybe he likes me back, maybe not. I have zero clue.

Nevertheless, I didn’t get my summer romance story. But, it made me think- do people actually have summer flings?

Apparently they do. I’m just the odd one out here. Oh well- maybe next summer!

I’ve talked to some fellow students with better luck than me. (lovey-dovey-mush warning). Maybe their stories will inspire you to actually text that girl back. Trust me- she’s begging you to.

Senior Hannah Benzinger met Xaver in fall 2017 and got to visit him again this past summer. If you didn’t know, Xaver was a foreign exchange student last year. They instantly became best friends and things escalated above and beyond what she ever expected.

“I want him to live here so badly. Him and I have devised a plan for him to join the military, move here, and marry me,” said Benzinger.

Flying to Germany to spend time with someone is a pretty big event, which means Hannah and Xaver have a lot of great memories together.

“It’s so hard to pick a favorite memory with him- he’s my favorite person. If I had to choose, I’d say it was going to the disco,” said Benzinger.

Being best friends, these two lovebirds talk every day. They even went as far as to hold a fake wedding and write each other vows. Hannah plans on keeping hers forever.

“As much as I wish I could actually date him, being his best friend is cool enough,” said Benzinger.

Junior Brady Collins experienced a traditional summer romance this year at PFEW.

Well, it truly was a summer fling. We met the first day and hit it off right from that moment,” said Collins.

You could say it was love at first sight- the moment Brady and his mystery girl made eye contact, they were hitched.

“We met the first day at the CEO lunch they had. I was elected CEO of my company, and she was elected CEO of hers. She sat across from me, I looked at her a couple times and somehow got her number,” said Collins.

Although their romance was limited to a week, they still made a strong connection. They talk almost daily, and Brady said he’ll never forget her.

“ I don’t think I have one favorite memory, just the whole week. It was like an escape from reality. We spent a lot of time together so almost all of my memories from the week contain her, so that’s pretty cool,” said Collins.

Disclaimer- Cute Boy From Work, if you somehow found this article please don’t think I’m weird. It’s all in good fun. I promise I’m totally normal and definitely loveable. In a cool, non creepy way.
