Savannah’s Sounds: Chromokopia

Can you feel the light? Autumn is everyone’s favorite season. At this glorious time of year, we can expect to see many amazing albums.

Unfortunately, Chromokopia by Tyler, the Creator, is not one of those times. I was very disappointed in this album, but as a Tyler fan, I’m having a rough time admitting it.

Chromokopia is a Hip-Hop/Rap album released on October 28th. To say this album was hyped up would be an understatement. Two large semi-trucks were driving across America, hauling a large green box with the word “Chromokopia” in the middle in black lettering. I was getting excited seeing this, and I was more than intrigued by the rumors floating around.

Many people across America are well-versed in Mr. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean has not dropped a single song since 2019, and people have been itching for more ever since. Lots of conspiracies from the music world were saying that they SWORE Frank Ocean was in the trailer for the album, and that he would without a doubt be on it. I can’t lie, this had me excited.

But to no avail; we got no Frank! We have no true features! We got a couple of lines from various artists on “Sticky” (track 8) but the song just was not very good. Waste of a good feature, I fear.

We got some vocals from Daniel Caesar, Teezo Touchdown, Childish Gambino, GloRilla, Lil Wayne, Doechii, Lola Young, Latoiya Williams, and Sexyy Red but they were all dramatically underwhelming.

Despite the criticism, I didn’t think this was a terrible album, truly. I was just disappointed. Maybe IGOR was just that good and we couldn’t accept normalcy. I wish there were some more true features with full verses. A solo album is very difficult to execute well.

Of all the tracks, my personal favorite is ‘Judge Judy’, I enjoyed the beat and the way it mixed with the lyrics themselves.

I really was not pleased with ‘Balloon’ and ‘Sticky’ though. I didn’t like the repetition in ‘Sticky’ and didn’t think that features fit well on the track. Balloon just wasn’t fantastic to me, the beat of it drives me insane.

Overall, I’m going to rate this album a 5.6/10. I enjoyed a few songs, but I can’t see myself listening to them frequently.
