Healthy Habits to start in 2018

February 13, 2018

Junior Jake Allday enjoys a healthy apple during first lunch and says, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” He shows that eating a healthy lunch will make you a happier and healthier person.

As the New Year begins so do resolutions. Now I’m not going to preach on major things that will cost you lots of time and money. Instead, I’m going to give you some small habits to follow that will change your life… in a good way of course. Some of these may seem so simple that it’s hard but trust me, you can do it!

  1. Wake up & go to bed early
  • The key to this tip is to be CONSISTENT! This means that you should stick to a schedule. Yes, I know that it will be hard at first, but you just have to have the motivation to get your butt out of bed. Waking up early will give you so much more time in the morning to get ready, have a good breakfast, and even get in a short workout.
  • Now the other portion of this is to also go to bed at a reasonable time. Going to bed late and waking up early, obviously, isn’t going to help. So make sure you go to bed at a good time and staying away from electronics! They are distracting and will keep you up for way longer than you expect. I’m so guilty of this! So instead of staring at the trending page on Instagram or the latest episode of your favorite Netflix series, read a book or do something that doesn’t require a screen.
  1. Make your bed
  • I know this sounds like something your mom usually yells at you to do but it’s actually quite helpful. Believe it or not it’s proven to be a huge confidence booster. Making your bed will make your life feel a little more put together even if everything else is a mess. Even if you have an awful day, it’s good to know that you’ll be coming home to a neatly made bed. If this simple task can make you feel this much better, than imagine having a whole clean room!
  1. Drink more Water
  •  Everyone knows the importance of drinking water to the extent of “if you don’t drink it you’ll die.” But it actually has a lot more benefits than you know. Some examples are the prevention of fatigue, headaches, and bloating. Which can all be caused by dehydration, so drink up! So the healthy amount of water to drink per day is about a half-gallon. Now not everyone is going to measure out exactly a half gallon, but by just drinking it more often, you will see the advantages. Some benefits may be a healthier skin completion, boosts the immune system, and being in a good mood. When your body is functioning at its best, you will feel great and be happier!

  1. Work out until you sweat
  • Working out is a great way to stay physically and mentally healthy! Now I’m not saying you need to become a gym junky and be able to lift three times your body weight. Any type of physical activity is great for you, whether that be going for a long walk, run, or even playing a sport. Anything that can get you up and moving is so beneficial and will make you feel great afterwards.
  1. Give a smile or compliment
  • It feels so good to make someone else happy! You don’t have to show your appreciation for someone with some huge gesture. A simple “You look nice today” or a smile can mean the world to someone who has been having a rough day. It also makes you feel good about yourself for making someone else smile.
  1. Laugh more
  • Of course, we all love a good laugh with a group of friends or even just laughing at ourselves. Laughing makes us feel great, and for reasons I didn’t know before doing a quick google search. According to the World Wide Web laughing can actually make you a healthier person with more ability to fight disease. Now whether it’s true or not that’s up for you to decide but I personally believe this is true. Laughing relieves stress and plus it’s a great way to tone those abs for your summer bod.
  1. Listen to music
  • Listening to some uplifting and fun music can make anyone feel better. Sometimes it’s really good to just put in some earbuds and chill. I know I like to shut negative things and just relax by listening to some good songs. Comment below some awesome songs that make you happy!
  1. Eat Healthier
  • Now this might be the hardest for me, especially when all I want is a bag of chips. It almost can seem impossible to give up something that’s your favorite, but it can be done. My advice is giving up just one unhealthy food or drink a month and replacing it with a healthier option. An example of this would be giving up soda for smoothies. It’s still a nice treat without all the unhealthy sugars.

Hi my name is Sarah Vasas, I like long walks on the beach. I play soccer and I defend the ball. Mess with me and I will mess you up. I was born to kick balls. I like all foods specifically french fries. I ONLY like hot chocolate NEVER coffee. I really like the color blue but I’m down for pink as well. I will never understand math… never. Science is sorta more of my thing. I want to study nursing in college and possible play soccer as well. Game of Thrones is by far my favorite tv show. 10 out of 10 I highly recommend! Also Stranger Things is a very good series on Netflix so that is also something I enjoy watching. Don’t think I hate you just because I’m not smiling 24/7. So come up and talk to me… if you dare. Ok. Duces.
