Turnt 4 Turkey Day

We’ve all seen the tweets talking about how November 1st starts Christmas season, but what about Thanksgiving?

It seems like every year people go straight from Halloween to Christmas and skip Thanksgiving. My question to this is, why? Why are we just skipping over a holiday that brings people together?

Logging onto Instagram and Twitter I see posts on November 1st that say Christmas has officially begun, but it hasn’t. Thanksgiving is only beginning. Stop trying to shove Christmas spirit down my throat. I don’t want to be cheery yet. There is plenty of time to listen to Christmas music, put up your tree, and buy presents after Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving decorations are sometimes nowhere to be seen in stores. Right after October 31st, all you can see is Christmas decor. Walk into a few stores and you can already see Christmas trees being sold. My family has been guilty of putting up our tree before Thanksgiving, but in the past couple of years we’ve waited until Thanksgiving was officially over.

Right when Halloween ends, it seems like Christmas should start. But we have to remember that Thanksgiving comes in between.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with the people who matter the most to you, whether that be family or friends. And sure, some people have relatives who will ask them questions about school and relationships and that can get annoying, because how do I explain to my 75-year-old grandma that I’m #single4lyfe, but they’re just asking because they care.

Some think of Thanksgiving as their favorite holiday, while others think of it as a waste of time. Although these people have a right to their own opinions, they’re wrong. Too many people look at it as time that they get off from school and/or work. Don’t get me wrong; I love having time off from school and not having to think about the loads of assignments I have due that are stressing me out, but that’s not what it’s all about for me.

Personally, Thanksgiving happens to be my favorite holiday, and not just because my birthday is on the same week. I love spending time with my family or friends; gathering around a table to stuff my face with food and talking to the people I enjoy the most. How could I not love it?

Sometimes I do get annoyed that I have to spend so much time with relatives who judge my music taste, the way I dress, and the tv shows that I watch, but who doesn’t get annoyed with their family? In the end, it’s worth it because I love catching up with people, some who I haven’t seen for a long time.

When I think about all this, it makes me sad that Thanksgiving is sometimes skipped over. Instead of going from boo to Santa, go from boo to yum!

Thanksgiving should be a time to enjoy, so I ask, what happened to the holiday?
