Jobs
You either love them or you hate them, but you better get used to it because you’ll be working for the rest of your life. Luckily, I found some of your classmates who love their job. But what exactly do some of these kids do?
“I work at Target, and I love my job,” said junior Hannah Howell.
Another student, junior Reilly Huff, currently works at Applebees.
“It is an enjoyable and flexible place of employment,” Huff said.
Part time jobs aren’t always the best, so it’s always a good thing if you enjoy your work.
“Overall, it is a fairly easy job,” said Huff. “The people are great, and I feel valued there.”
Senior Taylor Davis, who works at Playful Pooch, also says she loves her job, and she would recommend it to other people. However, she didn’t particularly enjoy her last job as a waitress and dishwasher. Others agree that they weren’t the biggest fan of previous jobs.
Howell said, “I used to work at Saint Barnabas, and I hated every second of it. It was an awful experience.”
Part time jobs are important in helping students save up money for college, car payments, and/or phone payments, however, it’s important to get a good amount of hours in.
“I work five or four times a week,” said Howell. “On the weekdays, I work about four or five hours, and on the weekends, I work seven.”
Huff says she usually works on weekends.
“[I usually work] around dinner/evening, between four and 11pm,” Huff said.
Davis says she usually works three to 7:30, one to 7:30, or 6:45 to 11.
“I work every other day, [but] not during softball season,” said Davis.
Another challenge students may face is how they manage their time between school, work, and other activities.
“[I participate in] multiple clubs, musical, dance team, and competitive dance,” said Huff.
Balancing work with a busy schedule is never easy.
“[It is difficult to manage] sometimes,” said Huff. “However, I find the best way to manage everything is to plan ahead and be good at prioritizing.”
Working can leave less time for doing school work, chores, hanging out with friends, or other activities.
“I think it’s kind of difficult because I usually work late,” said Howell.
Personally, I think it can be difficult to manage my time between school, work, and my activities.
I currently work at Dairy Queen (the one on route 8), and I absolutely love it. I work two to four times a week, either after school from one to five or five to 9:30.
I have the nicest boss ever, a flexible schedule, and the job is not very difficult. I would definitely recommend working here.
Previously, I have worked at Up-N-Running; however, it just wasn’t the right fit for me. But, it would be a great job for active runners who know about different kinds of running shoes.
One positive of this job was that it was never super busy during the winter, so I could do homework if everything was done and there were no customers.
If any students are currently looking for a job, check your class’ google classroom. Our counselors do a really good job of posting local businesses that are looking for new employees (It’s actually how I found out about working at Up-N-Running).
For example, some of the most recent postings are for jobs at Hammers, Alameda Park, Family Bowlaway, II-VI, HP Starr Lumber, Saxon Country Market, Fox’s Pizza Den, and Arby’s.
Consider looking into some of these class posts if you’re job searching!
