Nothing is worse than watching a show with your friends, and when you have one episode left, you get locked out and now you can’t finish it. Have you ever been sharing a Netflix account with someone, then you went to log in one day only to find out that Netflix is cracking down on its sharing policies?
This lockdown on streaming services has thrown a lot of wrenches into family and friends sharing plans. Now, some people are left with no access to Netflix or they have to buy their own Netflix account, when they are spending so much money on many other subscriptions already. So, how is this impacting the students and staff of KHS?
Let’s start this article by asking why Netflix even did this in the first place. An article by Forbes about Netflix sharing said, “Netflix has tried putting its prices up, but it’s not enough to allow the streaming giant to invest in new content. There are 100 million people sharing passwords, and Netflix wants to monetize them.”
Netflix is acting like they don’t have enough money to support themselves. At this point, they are just taking money from their viewers. By doing this some people have just given up on Netflix altogether.
Computer Science teacher Ms. Gaston thinks that this new sharing policy is ridiculous and that Netflix should have never done this in the first place. It’s not just her who thinks this; many people agree. Some people have even found a way to cheat the system and still use someone else’s Netflix that they don’t even talk to.
Case in point, Math teacher Mr. Friskorn said that this sharing thing is stupid and should never have been put in place at all. He also found a way to still use someone else’s Netflix. He uses his daughter’s friend’s Netflix.
The reason he thinks he can use Netflix is that the profile is named “community”. He doesn’t know how many people have access to that profile but all he knows is that he doesn’t have to pay for it yet.
Then, four people can understand why Netflix is doing this. Substitute Mr. Andressai spoke out and said, “We used to have one Netflix account in four households and that was a lot.”
So. he was almost relieved that he didn’t have to share anymore. It was getting too much for him when everyone was asking for his Netflix.
He even gave insight on another streaming service that is going to cut down on sharing, and that service is. . . HULU. That’s right, Hulu account holders got an email on February 4th that said they would be joining in and also cracking down on sharing.
Something I want to bring attention to is how expensive all these subscriptions are! Netflix per month is $15.49 and that’s just for the standard one for your house. Try adding the Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ bundle for $24.99 with no ads.
Just those things right there are $40.48 alone. That is a lot of money that you have to put aside for the month and keep in mind that those prices can always go up.
Senior Samantha Robb is someone who has a lot of streaming services.
She has Netflix, Prime Video, and the Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ bundle. She has stated that she does pay a lot for her subscriptions and that sometimes it is getting too much.
When she got locked out of her Netflix account, she used one of her friends, but now she isn’t able to do that anymore. That isn’t great news for someone who gets locked out of their Netflix account constantly.
In my family, we all like to pay for one subscription then we share it among all of us. However, now we all have to get and pay for all of our subscriptions, which is not convenient at all.
Yes, there are free trials for the services, but some people will forget to cancel them and get charged all that money for a service they don’t think they have. That is how they get you.
The stop-sharing policy is affecting people everywhere. I don’t think Netflix should ever have put this in place. By adding this new policy, Netflix is going to lose some of its most loyal customers.
The thing that’s also inconvenient is that for Netflix’s standard plan, you can only have two devices streaming at a time.
Netflix cracking down on account sharing has left many customers unhappy and with Netflix
