Every year a new wave of freshmen rush aimlessly into the high school: some excited for what’s to come and some merely disappointed.
“I expected it to be fun, but it’s not that great. It’s hard,” said freshman Jimmy Davis.
We all know that freshmen are still trying to grasp what high school is, and that you can’t just mess around anymore. Other freshmen and their teachers share a different story.
“There’s a certain excitement about being a part of the high school for the first time that I enjoy experiencing along with the students,” said biology teacher, Ms. Woller.
Woller has taught grades 6-12 throughout her career and said teaching freshmen has always been her favorite.
“It simplifies my day,” said Woller, “but I actually feel out of my comfort zone when I go to study hall in the cafeteria with multiple grades.”
Starting school each year can be hard for everyone, but it’s not as hard when you’re not alone.
Some freshmen enjoy more of the social aspects of school, like having gym and study hall with their buddies, and who can really blame them?
Davis said, “I like hanging out with my friends.”
During sophomore Abbie Trout’s freshman year experience, she made new friends and may have lost a few on the way, but she won’t let it weigh on her.
“Freshman year was definitely tedious; you didn’t really have many options,” said Trout. “But this is your first year of high school, make a TikTok about it.”
Freshman year doesn’t last forever, so make the most of it! Be kind to the people around you, and find where and who you belong with.
“If you got beef,” Davis said, “then settle it.”
“Don’t get mad over everything. It’s not that deep,” Trout said.
Before you know it, this year will be over and you will get through it. Some days may feel longer than others but just remember you’re not alone.
“I hope that all students, not just freshmen,” said Ms. Woller, “realize that every single day is a brand, new opportunity to make good choices for a better year ahead.”
