Most Likely To Get Hurt: Josh Goodlin
Freshman year: Concussion. Sophomore year: Another Concussion. Junior year: Broken Ankle. Senior Year: Surgery on shoulder, as well as cyst growing in his stomach. Senior Josh Goodlin is known for the immense amount of injuries he has sustained.
“If I had to describe myself with one word I would use fragile because no matter what I’m doing, I always find a way to get hurt,” said Goodlin.
Although he seems to always be injured, Goodlin excels in athletics. He loves lacrosse and lifting. He took second place at the wrestling state final in 2012 and played football for most of his life until his middle school concussions forced him to take a break. Injuries have always been an issue for Goodlin. No matter how critical the injury, Goodlin is determined to recover as quickly as possible.
Goodlin’s concussions not only took him out of the game but also out of school.
“The worst part about coming back after a concussion is having to teach yourself the lessons you missed to get caught up,” said Goodlin.
Goodlin has had to catch himself up on his fair share of school work. He had to work harder off the field to make sure he wasn’t falling behind academically. He may fall behind in school now, but he certainly didn’t after missing five months for a concussion.
“Josh may slack off in school now but he makes up for it in other activities, like lifting and lacrosse,” said sophomore Matt Goodlin, Josh’s brother.
Goodlin’s family is always there for support when he endures an injury. With four boys who have played sports at a competitive level, Mrs. Goodlin, Josh’s mother, is quite use to the head injuries, torn quads, and everything in between.
“Raising four boys who love to compete, both on and off the field, injuries are unavoidable,” said Mrs. Goodlin.
Mr. and Mrs. Goodlin both make sure they take care of their sons when they need it, only when they need it. Bruises, bumps and tears are cured by the Goodlin’s hot tub.
“Whenever we tell our mom that something hurts her answer is ‘Sit in the hot tub,’” say all of the Goodlin boys.
After an injury it is always hard to go back to sports, the fear of being injured lingers in the back of the mind. Goodlin looks at returning from an injury in a different perspective.
“I don’t let the fear of being injured effect me. I’ll probably end up getting hurt anyway so why hold back while I’m healthy-ish,” said Goodlin.
Injuries pose a problem for every athlete. Josh Goodlin never let his injuries hold him back in school or back on the field. Goodlin plans on going to BC3 after high school for general studies. His friends and family hope he will not sustain an injury there.
“Injuries are inevitable for me but to me it’s about how fast I can recover and get back to sports,” said Goodlin.
