The Weirdest Second Semester

Caroline Ejzak, Layout Editor

This is the weirdest and most unsettling end to my high school career. Before I go any further, I would just like to say that there is nothing any of us can do about this situation, except stay home. What I have been living by is this: You cannot trouble yourself with things you cannot control, so make the best out of the situation you are in. Personally, I have been extremely okay with these circumstances; I get to cook all my meals, exercise whenever I want, spend time with my family, and just be at peace with myself.

Activity 1

  1. What frustrates you the most recently? Vent it out in your writing. If nothing angers you, what are you most passionate about?

I’m not too frustrated right now, this isn’t bothering me all that badly. I’m really passionate about art and creating. This goes from drawing and painting to baking and cooking and keeping myself occupied. I made myself gluten free pizza crust out of cauliflower and then made homemade pizza sauce. That pizza was the best I ever had because it took time and love to make it so good.

I just finished Tiger King and now i’m frustrated about how many big cats are living in captivity. It frustrates me how these wack jobs are keeping them in cages and don’t care at all about their well being or the fact that they should be in the wild.

  1. List the one thing each day that stood out

March 23- my brother and I started fighting over the basement and who gets the TV.

March 24-I had my first online video chat and it was really fun

March 25- I woke up motivated and started teaching myself  French online

March 26- birthday celebration for my brother’s 21st

March 27- decided where I was going to college

March 28- watched a 5 hour long tennis match & won scattergories

March 29-spent most of the day outside in the beautiful weather

March 30-  started a 5 day workout challenge

March 31- made a really good tofu stir fry

April 1- my sister came home from atlanta

April 2- i played tennis w my siblings

April 3- made oat milk and vegan gluten free pizza

April 4- drew in my sketchbook for hours

April 5- took a rest day and did some relaxing yoga

April 6- Played tennis with my sister and got a new chinese dish

April 7- made my 3rd batch of granola

April 8- cried because we aren’t going back to school

  1. List the people that you have met on your journey
  • This old man at the grocery store was walking behind me and said to me, “coming up behind you, stay 6 feet away, don’t cough or sneeze on me”

To which I replied, “Okay”

He then said, “I’m just kidding”

And I said, “I’m not and sprinted away from the sunflower butter section”

  • Mary and Joe: an elderly couple that I always see at the tennis courts, they are very good.

  1. What is the one thing I will miss the most from school

I miss interacting with people!! Not even just my friends but everyone. I love people, they’re so entertaining. I love my family but they aren’t my peers. I miss having order and an agenda to my days.

  1. What are you observing other people doing?

My siblings play so many video games. My friends play video games too. My only child friends are not doing well. My dad and sister work from home. People are starting to go outside more, on walks, runs etc.

  1. What are you wearing everyday and why?

Pj’s, workout clothes, back to pj’s. There’s no real need to get dressed in actual clothes since I don’t go anywhere but the park by my house to walk. Sometimes I will get dressed in real clothes after I shower though, just to make myself feel more normal.

  1. What are you learning about what’s happening around the globe?

China is recovering because they have a very strict government and were forced into quarantine early on. Italy surpassed China’s death rate and is being hit the hardest. The US isn’t far behind Italy and people don’t realize it. People, especially young, are going out still thinking they are immune when they AREN’T!!!! Also if Trump calls COVID-19 the “CHINA VIRUS” ONE MORE TIME IM GONNA LOSE IT.

Activity 2: Use social media or face time to get answers to the following questions:

What is something you missed while away from school?

Student Name: Nate Jakovac

Grade: 12

Seeing everyone and getting to enjoy that last bit of school that we have, oh and baseball.

Student Name: Jack Walker

Grade: 10

Im very social so probably talking to people. Academically, I miss a schedule. Teachers teaching lessons instead of just giving filler work to do and lot of it lol

How have you been spending your days?

Student Name: Justin Tristani

Grade: 12

Ooo um, lots of netflix and working out.

Student Name: Blair Bowen

Grade: 11

I have been sleeping in until noon just about everyday, then watching this new HBO show called the Outsider based off of a Stephen King book (very good 10/10 recommend). I’ve been visiting my nana because she’s been lonely lately even though I guess we’re really not supposed to visit old people but she’s the exception(; I also  have been watching bernie sanders’ live-streams and decided to start a Depop to sell people’s clothes as well as my own to raise money for “One Fair Wage”. If any newspaper readers would like to donate that would be very cool. I also finished my online economics about a week before I needed to so if that doesn’t scream boredom Idk what does

How much work have you done on your “at home” lessons?

Student Name: Nathan Ruediger

Grade: 11

Surprisingly, I’ve done everything I’ve been expected to do all through day 3.

Student Name: Emma Venatta

Grade: 10

I’ve done quite a bit of work. Not an overwhelming amount but just enough to stay up to speed.

Question: In your opinion, what is the best outcome from this virus for the rest of the school year?

Student Name: Blaze Voltz

Grade: 11

What I would want to happen is for us to go back to school after these two weeks is up. I mean I think there’s a pretty high chance that we might finish off the year online. Like before we went on break I was obviously pretty hyped about having the next two weeks off but honestly it’s been pretty boring. Just doing the same thing every single day and not going anywhere gets old real quick. Also it sucks that spring sports are most likely gonna be cancelled as well. And for the seniors, I can’t even imagine how you and the others feel. It’s honestly crazy what’s happening.

Student Name: Joey Gigglioti

Grade: 10

I think because of the severity of this virus being spread around, I feel that the school should let us do the rest of the work from home. Best case scenario, let us move on to the next grade. The school couldn’t do that because how would they be providing an education or food for kids who rely on school lunches as their meal for the day?

And we can’t have this thing spread around, most people live with or have close connections with their grandparents, or living with someone who has a pre-existing chronic disease, which puts their health at risk.

People need to PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING.

Student Name: Chloe McAnallen

Grade: 12

I feel like if we don’t go back the best outcome would be spending time with fam, but if we do go back, it’ll be good to say goodbye to friends and teachers.

Activity 3: Take 5-10 images of your quarantine experience: these can be selfies, pictures of your family, pictures of your pets, etc.
