Bad Bunny in the Bowl

Bad Bunny in the Bowl

Ah yes, here we are again. It seems we have reached the time of year when people are so divided by something so small that it doesn’t even affect them even a little bit. Of course, I am talking about the Super-Bowl Halftime show, what else could it possibly be?

Anyway, about a month ago, Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, better known by his stage name, Bad Bunny, was announced as the multi-billion dollar event’s performer, and it has some people wondering why, like sophomore Evan Schriner.

“Personally, I don’t listen to his music, but I do understand his popularity and influence.” However, he said, “I don’t like him being picked for the halftime show because it feels like they only picked him to get more countries and people to watch the Superbowl, so they could make more money.”

Money money money, that’s the name of the game. You would think that if anybody didn’t need some extra cash, the NFL would probably be at the top of that list.

In case you don’t know who this Terrible Rabbit is, he is a Spanish singing, Puerto Rican born music artist who has gained quite the popular following around the world, winning three Grammy’s and exposing Latin Rap to the mainstream U.S. music scene.

Bunny recently took a co-starring role in Happy Gilmore 2, as Oscar the waiter. The film propelled him to one of the most popular faces in the world. I’m gonna be honest, I had no idea what he looked like until I saw the credits and I was like, “there is no way that was Bad Bunny.

I think this role kind of was a setup so he could dip his toes in the water of the American audience before taking the stage in February.

Senior Cross Swaney said, “Happy Gilmore definitely helped his popularity, especially with older people who thought he was funny.”

Schriner added, “Before this role I don’t think he had enough influence to do a halftime show, but now since everybody knows what he looks like and who he is, I think it will come off better.”

But to some, it did not come off better at all. These people include the followers of the late Charlie Kirk, and his company Turning Point USA.

TPUSA has offered an alternative choice for a halftime show, the company, now run by Kirk’s wife Erica, has been advertising what they call “The All-American Halftime Show.”

Although there are no real details about this alternative, many rumors have been circulating about who could be in it. For example, last week it was reported that Adam Sandler and his wife were to be on this secondary halftime show.

These reports were quickly dismissed, and frankly weren’t really ever taken seriously. I mean he just was in a movie with this guy and now he would be taking away a huge moment in his career? It just didn’t make sense.

“I honestly don’t think it’s a bad idea, I don’t really want to watch something I can’t understand,” said Swaney, “but the uproar it’s getting might cause it to become pretty bad.”

If you’re like me, which I bet most people are, it doesn’t really matter at all who the halftime performer is. Everyone always complains about who it is anyway, so just enjoy it and move on with your life. But, some people do have recommendations for the NFL.

“If I could pick somebody, I would pick Chris Stapleton to do the Halftime Show,” said Swaney.

“Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, or really any country artist would be good,” said Schriner, “It would be cool because it would be different from the hip hop/ rap theme they have been going for in the past couple years.”
