The Fasting Lane
Since you know all health terms need a cute abbreviation– Intermittent fasting is (IF).
IF is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. In this respect, it’s not a diet in the conventional sense but more accurately described as an eating pattern.
Now for the science side of things.
“The food we eat is broken down by enzymes in our gut and eventually ends up as molecules in our bloodstream. Carbohydrates, particularly sugars and refined, are quickly broken down into sugar, which our cells use for energy. If our cells don’t use it all, we store it in our fat cells as, well, fat. But sugar can only enter our cells with insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas.
Between meals, as long as we don’t snack, our insulin levels will go down and our fat cells can then release their stored sugar, to be used as energy. We lose weight if we let our insulin levels go down. The entire idea of IF is to allow the insulin levels to go down far enough and for long enough that we burn off our fat,” and that is from Harvard so you better believe it.
In simplified terms,
- Wait to eat
- At first our body says “?”
- Then it uses stored fat for energy to keep us alive
A few days ago I heard someone mention a “Water Fast”….Uhhh…
What te heECk ?!1
“In fact, research shows that you may lose up to 2 pounds (0.9 kg) each day of a 24- to 72-hour water fast (7Trusted Source).
Stay with me here,
Unfortunately, a lot of the weight you lose may come from water, carbs, and even muscle mass,” says a credible source called Healthline.
First of all, this is a terrible idea in general as water cannot be the only fuel your body is running on. Calories are a unit of measurement of what your body uses for energy, water, as you know, HAS NONE.
Also, it contradicts the much healthier, tried and true method of drinking water as well as eating food.
Another reason this is a bad idea is how close it is to an eating disorder, which is extremely dangerous to everyone especially teenagers.
Maybe fasting isn’t for you in general, but if you do want to do a fast, I advise intermittent over water.
