Many students at Knoch are very fashion forward. After the awkward middle school stage of dressing like highlighters, wearing checkered vans, and wearing scrunchies on our wrist, we have something to prove.
Spring is the time for fashion. The weather is warmer, and the magazines (yes those still exist) say what the ins and outs are for the warmer months. While doing my research I found the top five biggest trend predictions:
- Color Blocking: This is when you wear two colors that don’t necessarily go together and “block” them. The recommended color combos are light pink and gray, blue and brown, and canary yellow and off white. Fashion experts do this with layering the objects on top of each other. You can achieve this look by layering button ups under sweaters or layering tank tops.
- Textures such as lace and fringe: Like stated above, layering items are in, and this is no different. One of the biggest trends on the rise is the layering of lace with simple outfits. The pop of lace is meant to take a simple t-shirt and jeans outfit and elevate it. Fringe is meant to elevate outfits in a different way.The fringe is meant to add edge or even an western feel to the outfit, unlike lace which is meant to class up an outfit.
- Bright denim: Jeans and denim are a staple in almost everyone’s closet. However, bright blue and light wash are more in than ever. The idea is that the light wash will naturally brighten the outfit and make the person wearing it look brighter as well. Following, dark denim is very out. The dark denim is said to make you look more pale and wash out most skin tones. So if you want your tan to glow, stay with light wash.
- Ponchos: Yep, you heard me right, ponchos. I know you must be thinking of the classic rain poncho: The ones made of cheap plastic that break after one one wear. But, these are not what we are talking about. The poncho connects to indigenous cultures in South America. The poncho has one hole for the head while letting the rest of the cloth drape around your body. This style is what we are going back to. However, ponchos are being made of lighter, sometimes even sheer, material so it can be layered with other items. Last summer, they were being used as beach coverups, but people believe they will grow into everyday wear during this spring.
- Flats: By far this is what I have seen the most. Many believe that flats have become very versatile in fashion. They can be dressed up or down, you can wear them to the beach or a wedding, or,even better, a beach wedding! Many fashion sites suggest making your every day shoe a flat instead of a sneaker as they can easily level up an outfit. They also come in many different styles, meaning you can find the pair that fits you the best.
But what do Knoch students think? Will any of these ,or different, trends arise at Knoch? When reaching out to Knoch students I went to the most stylish brother and sister duo at knoch: Jackson and Kamryn Burtner.
I asked Jackson Burtner what trends he thinks he’ll see; he said the following. “At Knoch I think there will be lots of blue denim and layering. I like layering,””I think jorts will stay in the rotation but I expect more open toed shoes like flip flops and birks.” Personally, I hope Jackson is right with his predictions. Minus open toed shoes…
Next I went to Jackson’s older sister who he said was one of his biggest fashion inspirations. When talking to Kamryn Burtner I asked her what trend she is ready to see leave and what she thinks will replace it. “Leopard print! It needs to go. It has just run its course. However I think deer print and lace could be good alternatives.” said Kamryn.
All things considered, I’m excited to see what comes next. Who knows maybe higher inspired fits will be the next thing walking at fashion week. No matter what, remember to wear what makes you feel like you!
