On February 14th, 1984, a mother and two kids were found dead inside of their home in Colorado. (Another reason to hate Valentine’s Day. You can never trust men.)

37-year-old Cassandra Rundle, her 12-year-old son Detriecht Sturm and 10-year-old daughter Melanie Sturm were found by Rundle’s ex-husband when he was dropping off a Valentine’s Day present. He called the police at 10:45 am and was never considered a suspect because there was no DNA or evidence to connect him to the murders.

Ms. Rundle and her daughter were assaulted and all three were badly beaten before death. Both girls were tied up with electrical cords, nude, and face down in a bed while the boy was unbound and laying on the floor of his room. The cause of death for everyone was strangulation.

A few months before Rundle’s death, she put out two ads on Colorado Spring Suns and was looking for a man. One of the posts she sent received 54 responses and it said, “Blonde, green eyes, 5-feet-2-inches, 95-pounds, seeking a rugged individualist. Am a free spirit, independent, well educated, somewhat shy, sensitive, and enjoy life. Am a one-man woman looking for one good man. Please send a photo and a short letter.” The second ad said, “warm, together, bright, beautiful and modest lady seeking friendship with a gentleman of quality and character, 30-40 years old.” According to an AP news article in 1985, detective Sgt. Joe Kenda said, “Although none of the men are suspects in the brutal slaying of Cassandra Susan Rundle, all will be questioned.”

After 35 years of investigating and interviewing the men that were interested in Rundle, they came to nothing. Colorado police are still searching for the killer and will take any tip they can to lead them closer to solving this mystery.
