Verdict: So fire
Let’s take a minute and give Netflix a round of applause for bringing back romantic comedies!
I’m not sure whose idea it was to move on from this genre because, personally, I will devour it every time without fail. I do not require variety in plot, I can stomach the cringe, and I am a sucker for a cute male lead. I am inexplicably upset that I missed out on being a teen during the 2000s era, where everyone was releasing either rom-coms or Dystopian movies, because WHY did we ever move on from that?? I don’t like horror, I don’t need sci-fi, and I have little interest in superheroes (except Spider-Man and Black Panther, of course).
Without shame, I will tell you that Netflix delivered with this one. The basic plot is that there is a young woman named Alex whose mother dies (not a spoiler), and in her mother’s will, she expects to inherit her business, but her mother has other plans for her. Along the way, Alex finds herself, her passions, and even love.
I thought that the premise of this movie was extremely creative, and I was happy that it wasn’t one of the same few premises that are constantly reused. Do not mistake me, I would’ve watched it either way, but the variety is nice, not required. Although I am not Sofia Carson’s biggest fan, she has been disproving me lately, between this movie and Carry-On (also on Netflix), I have enjoyed both movies and thought that she was the perfect fit for the roles. As well, Kyle Allen was an amazing fit for Brad, and I hope to see more work with him in the future.
If you haven’t watched this movie, then what are you waiting for?? It is cute, fun, and totally a worthwhile movie. I feel like so many rom-coms are just fun watches, but this one holds an important life lesson at the heart of it. It is never too late or too hard to follow your heart, or maybe even to find it somewhere that you don’t expect.
Until next time!
