As long as I look fly by prom night…
Just Dance

Everybody knows that April showers bring May flowers.

Everybody also knows that, like clockwork, the end of April means something other than flowers for schools around here: prom.

Beginning in April, my social media feed is filled with videos and pictures from other schools’ proms. I scroll through TikTok transition videos and through Instagram photos of pretty girls in fancy dresses with their dapper dates or closest friends.

Even when I wasn’t a senior and wasn’t going to prom, I still enjoyed seeing videos and pictures, especially from Knoch, of girls and their dresses. I thought long and hard about what kind of dress I would wear, and what I definitely wouldn’t be wearing.

For those who might be wondering, yes, I found my dress. And I am so excited to wear it!

I don’t live under a rock; I have seen all the coming-of-age movies where prom is equated to the most important night of a girl’s life. They buy the perfect dress (✅), then dance like nobody is watching on the most magical night of their lives. As they say in High School Musical, it is the “Night of Nights,” which means every senior attending Knoch’s prom on May 8th has already begun preparations for their very own night of nights.

“I am going to prom with my boyfriend, senior Zach Szebalskie. When he asked, he lit up candles and spelled out ‘Prom?’ with them!” said senior Brooke Yetter.

A big part of the prom excitement is definitely who goes with whom and how they ask.

“Sometimes Alena and I go to the batting cages together at the Sebco fields, so one day when we went to hit, I got her favorite Starbucks drink and some flowers,” said senior Landon Harrison. “I wrote ‘Prom?’ on the lid of the Starbucks cup, and she said yes.”

Harrison will be attending with senior Alena Tekely. Whether you attend with a date, friends, or fly solo, prom attire is a must.

“My dress is white with colorful flowers, almost like a mermaid style. I got it from One Enchanted Evening,” said Yetter.

Sounds beautiful, and I cannot wait to see it! I love seeing the different dresses that girls pick because it is honestly a form of self-expression. I know first-hand the meticulous process of trying on different dresses and finally landing on something that perfectly suits what you want.

“My dress is coral and beaded!” said Tekely.

I have seen Alena’s dress, and let me tell you, it is just as perfect as it sounds!

“I am doing a blue suit with a coral bowtie and brown shoes,” said Harrison.

No matter what you wear, everyone has expectations for how their prom should go.

“Hopefully, there is good music and good places at the prom itself to take pictures. Also, hopefully it will be organized seating for dinner and won’t be crowded,” said Yetter.

Prom will be at The Atrium this year. As senior class treasurer, I can tell you that the cabinet will do its best! At the end of the day, there is only so much we can control, but we will give it everything we have.

“I’m a perfectionist and like to have everything done early, but we weren’t able to do that because we weren’t sure of the numbers,” said senior vice president Delaney Andrews. “I love getting to put together the decor and the music, though.”

I can definitely relate to that! It has been super tough to stay patient throughout this process. However, I have faith in our cabinet to get things done and give everyone a good time!

“I hope to have fun and make memories with my friends,” said Tekely.

Some have other goals in mind.

“I’m excited to get on the dance floor and hit a boogie. I expect to have an absolute blast, dancing a lot, and gaining aura,” said Harrison.

To each their own, I suppose. I definitely agree that I’m excited to dance, though! Putting together the playlist has been one of the best parts of planning prom.

“I’m excited to see all of our planning come together, and to have a last big event with my friends. I hope everyone enjoys themselves and has a good time. I’m very proud of the fundraising we did to lower ticket prices,” said Andrews.

We were able to bring ticket prices down to just $45 per person! Even if nothing else works out how we want it to, we can know that at least we were able to make prom more realistic for more students.

As Andrews said, “I love my class cabinet girls, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
