Ever since the prime of the U.S.–the 2010’s–the beloved Knoch High School has had some long, difficult winters. The Snowball at KHS was known well and loved by all up until the 2020 point, in which the worldwide pandemic affected high schools everywhere. Freeze no more! Or…is it…fear no more? Either way: SNOWBALL IS BACK!
“I am very excited to have a Snowball! I love Homecoming, so I was super excited to hear we were having another dance,” said junior Ava Rodgers.
From another junior girl’s perspective, I am also thrilled! Especially due to the fact that whenever my sisters were at KHS, I got to see them all ready to go to the Snowball, and I got to see the photos on their bedroom wall afterwards. I always looked up to this time of high school because of them! For freshmen, however, this is an entirely new idea.
Freshman Hope Mason said, “I’m super excited! The dances are always super fun. I’m getting off work early that day, and my sister is going to do my hair.”
But what about the students running the dance? After all, they are the ones who know the general layout of the Snowball and how it is intended to go. Are they just as excited?
“I’m excited to see how many people show up for this dance. There’s going to be Chick-Fil-A there too,” said senior Tayden Harrold. “We are planning for lots of fun and some good food.”
There’s a factor that plays an extremely crucial role in making a school dance great, other than food. That is: the music!
“I definitely prefer more hype songs. I like dancing and having fun with friends,” said Rodgers. “I think the dance will be fun! I just hope it has good music.”
Am I the only one who desperately wants to have at least one slow song??? Don’t get me wrong, I love dancing and singing my heart out, but a girl needs a break!
Mason said, “I like hype songs more, mainly because I don’t slow dance with anyone. I think the dance will cater to my liking.”
Recent dances at KHS have had mostly non-slow-dance songs, and it is understandable that students would prefer that kind of selection, but I’m still hopeful!!!
“I used to prefer hype songs more, but now I prefer either. Slower songs can give me a minute to relax before the hype songs happen again,” said Harrold. “From right now, it sounds like the song selection is almost the same as Hoco.”
For younger students, like Mason, going to the Snowball with just friends is the most common way to attend. For juniors, like Rodgers, and seniors, like Harold, going with a date or a significant other is more common and acceptable. However you decide to attend, the school and your friends are just happy that you are joining in on the winter fun!
Although it looks much differently from the last Snowball, in 2019, fashion is still in for the students!
“I am wearing a ruby red dress!” said Rodgers. “It is a very comfortable silky material.”
Mason added, “I got a sparkly royal blue dress!”
Compared to the last Snowball around seven years ago, our fashion now for this icey-occasion might seem a lot more stylish…but that’s just what they liked then!
With work and sports conflicts, it wouldn’t be surprising if some students were held back from being able to go to the Snowball, but some are taking time off and are leaving sports to come straight to the dance.
Rodgers said, “Before the dance my friend group and I are getting photos, but I have work until 3pm, so [I] probably won’t make it to dinner.”
Even after all of these things going on, some students are planning to do something after the Snowball, but most probably will need some rest, like Harrold.
“My post-dance plans are to go home and relax,” he said.
If most students aren’t aware, the Cafeteria Commons is going to be the hosting spot for the Snowball! It should be a bit different than how the gym has always been for dances, and it will be good to see how the space can be used differently than the gym!
“I think it’ll be good because of less people and a different setting at the dance,” said Harrold. “The cafeteria is much more modern than the gym, and I think that’ll change the experience.”
No matter where the dance is, how it’s decorated, or what everyone wears, the most important thing is that everyone makes great memories from the experience!
“My freshman Hoco, Andersen Kamer and I danced until the lights came on, and my feet were glittery and [dirty],” said Rodgers.
Harrold added, “This year’s Homecoming was my favorite, because I had a date and finally didn’t have to commit all my time to take pictures [or] run other booths for Yearbook and Photography Club.”
Whether you have been considering going to the Snowball or not, I hope you have the best weekend on the 31st, my half birthday 😉 And for those of you who are committed to going, make the best memories!
Rodgers said, “I am very excited to be having a Snowball! I love dances!”

What a throwback! Fun fact – we convinced the school to switch from snowball to homecoming because of state championship conflicts that always fell on the first weekend of November, making it hard for athletes to make it in time. I’m happy snowball is making a come back and now you get BOTH dances!
Loving these photos, especially the one taken on the DJ table. I think “Young Dumb & Broke” was playing during that moment, which really sums up the era. I got some great newspaper content up there!
Shoutout to Ms. T, I hope you dont give her as many grey hairs as the class of 2020 did…JK, she secretly loves the chaos.
Have fun at Snowball!
